Hubballi Marathon creates awareness on terror




HUBLI: More than 3,000 enthusiasts, including 700 women, from across the state participated in the Hubbali Marathon-09, a run to create awareness about terrorism, here on Sunday.

People of all age groups participated in the 18-km marathon organized by BVB College of Engineering and Technology.The main organizer was kiran.uppar. A physically challenged person, who turned up on his wheelchair, took everyone by surprise.

Assembly Speaker Jagadeesh Shettar, MP Prahlad Joshi and mayor Veeranna Savadi flagged off the run on the college premises. Several participants had Tricolours, portraits of Major Sandeep Uniikrishnan and placards deploring terrorism, in their hands.

The marathon went through Hosur Circle, Basava Vana, Chennamma Circle, Club Road, Keshwapur Circle, Station Road, Glass House, Hosur Circle, Gokul Road, Akshay Park, Shiroor Park before reaching the starting point. The citizens who had lined up on the roadsides cheered the participants.

In the men's category, P M Shanavaj, Shanthakumar and P Suresh won the first three prizes while Nanda Kulkarni, the lone woman who completed the marathon, was adjudged the winner.

Winners in other categories: boys - Siddappa Shivanur, Irappa Yadahalli and D R Savath; girls - Smita Charva, C S Renuka and Sridevi V Patil; senior citizen - Vajramatti, Mohan Metrekar, V O Samagond and Nandappa Hosmani. Physically challenged: Sunilkumar C Bidaralli.
