Malaprabha water to UAS varsity

DHARWAD: The long cherished dream of residents of Yattinagudda and University of Agricultural Sciences campus, which come under ward 3 Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation in Dharwad, was realized on Saturday. They were longing to have Malaprabha water supplied to them and it materialized with supply commencing on Independence Day.

Minister in-charge of Dharwad district Murugesh Nirani inaugurated the Rs 90 lakh Malaprabha water supply scheme in the presence of MP Prahlad Joshi, MLAs Seema Masuti, Chandrakant Bellad and Mayor Veeranna Savadi on Saturday.

The UAS and Yattinagudda were getting water from the borewell, while the rest of the city was getting Malaprabha water for decades. The water drawn from borewell was found to be not so fit for human consumption. Efforts by Yattinaguuda corporator Veeranagouda Patil and UAS V-C J H Kulkarni paid results with the government agreeing to fulfil their demand on cost sharing basis.

While the UAS has contributed Rs 60 lakh the government has put in Rs 30 lakh. The Karnataka Water Board laid the pipelines from Aminabhavi and constructed a tank with a capacity of 5 lakh litres of water.

Speaking at a function organized to inaugurate the facility, MP Prahlad Joshi and Mayor Veeranna Savadi urged the UAS authorities to spare land for construction of a ground level tank and a sewerage treatment plant. MLA Chandrakant Bellad and corporator Deepak Chinchore stressed the need to implement the project within the stipulated time frame without compromising on quality.

MP Joshi said plans to provide water 24X7 to all the areas in Hubli-Dharwad at a cost of Rs 550 crore under Public-Private Participation (PPP) were afoot.
