HUBLI: Just when it had settled a decades-old dispute over succession, the Mooru Savira Mutt, a centre of faith for many in north Karnataka, has drawn itself into another succession battle.
This time, a dispute erupted over the choice of a successor to the mutt. Some devotees did not agree with what they called the "unilateral decision" of Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami to appoint a successor.
The swami had chosen Sri Dingaleshwar Swami, head of Bale Hosur Mutt, to head the Mooru Savira Mutt after him. The devotees, some of whom are prominent citizens of the twin-cities, said the swami should have taken them into confidence before announcing his choice.
When the news broke out on Wednesday morning, several devotees gathered on the mutt premises and held a marathon meeting. Leaders like public works minister C M Udasi, assembly Speaker Jagadeesh Shettar, legislative council chairman Veeranna Mattikatti, former minister Basavaraj Horatti, MLAs Chandrakanth Bellad and Veerabhadrappa Halaharavi and others attended. Sri Tontada Siddhalinga Swami of Gadag and Fakira Siddharameshwar Swami of Shirahatti were also present in the meeting.
Later, VIPs and political leaders held a closed-door meeting with the seers. The devotees and leaders were able to convince the swami to put off the decision.
Sri Tontada Siddhalinga Swami said that the present head of Mooru Savira Mutt was concerned about the development of the mutt and was keen to strengthen it. He said a high-level committee would be set up to monitor the development of the mutt. He also said a decision on succession would be taken after taking everybody related to the mutt into confidence.
Later, Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami announced he had decided to put off the decision, owing to requests by the devotees.
Horatti told reporters the swami seemed to be hurt by the high-handedness of some people managing the mutt's activities. He also suspected all was not well with the mutt. "The swami's sudden decision has thrown light over the problems being faced by the mutt. It means that the mutt needs to develop with the participation of devotees," he said.

Long-drawn battle
The mutt has recently settled a long-drawn succession battle. The earlier seer, Sri Gangadhara Rajayogindra Swami, had appointed Sri Rudramuni Swami as his successor in 1991. A few years later, he changed his decision and appointed Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami as his successor. Sri Rudramuni Swami challenged this in court. The Supreme Court set up a tribunal, headed by a former High Court judge, and directed the parties to resolve the issue before him. The parties agreed before the tribunal that while Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swami would continue as head of the mutt, Sri Rudramuni Swami would head the Shadakshara Mutt in Tiptur.
