The S.D.M. College of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad was started on the 16th September 1976 under the Presidentship of Sri. Dr. D.Veerendra Heggade, the Present Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala. The college was initially affiliated to Karnatak University, Dharwad and from 1996 onwards it is under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore and is recognised by the Dental Council of India. Dharwad was chosen as the location for the institution as it would benefit a vast rural population that did not have access to dental treatment. The college had a modest beginning with 39 students and housed in a small place at the S.D.M. College of Engineering with 6 dental chairs in the first year. The institution was shifted to the new premises in the year 1991, August with full fledge all Dental & Medical departments with over 200 dental chairs and units. The institution extends the service to the rural and poor population by having satellite clinics at Tibetian colony of Mundgod, Dandeli, Halyal and Karnataka Cancer Hospital, Hubli. Clear cut and phased development have seen major advances being made every year. In the year 1991- 92 the post graduate training in various dental specialities was started with the approval of DCI and duly recognised there after. The progress just did not stop here. This institution was selected as the only centre in the country for primary FDSRCPS of Glasgow in the year 1995 and PART- A FRCS examination in General Surgery and Ophthalmology in the year 1997. Even though there are more than 160 medical colleges in the country this itself shows the recognition accorded to the facilities existing in the institution. Further the college has also proposed to hold M-Ortho exams in near future. Expansion is not only in terms of areas and facilitiies but also a constant improvement in the quality of educational services. The process of striving to grow better every day continues, by opening a super speciality Craniofacial Surgery and Research Centre with 50 beds in the year 1998. Even though the college came into existence a decade back, but the vision that saw the founding of the college could not be denied and grew to the present stage, as a largest dental college in Asia. Bachelor of Dental Sciences Degree (B.D.S.) Duration of the course is 4 years with one year compulsory rotatory Internship. The first and second year students are put through pre-clinical courses with the intention of preparing them for clinical experience. The third year and final year students are assigned and encouraged to conduct treatment on patients as he would do in practice, under the super vision of experienced teachers so as to provide highest level of dental care for the patient. Subjects Prosthodontics, Conservative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Periodontics, Oral Medicine & Radiology Master of Dental Sciences (M.D.S.) The course duration is two years Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry, Prosthodontics Periodontics, Orthodontics Pedodontics, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, Community Dentistry Dental Technician Course 2 years certificate course recognised by DCI Duration of The Course The duration of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery Course is of 4 years, with one year's compulsory internship. Eligibility for Admission: A candidate seeking admission to the B.D.S. degree course should have completed 17 years at the time of admission or on 31st December of the year of admission. The candidate must have passed the qualifying examination 2 years Pre-University Course of Karnataka, Intermediate or Pre-Medical Examination of a statutory University/Board, in India recognised by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore with a minimum of 50% marks in the optional group comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects in the first attempt. Candidates having equivalent qualification from any other, Universities/Board in India as well other nations are also eligible to apply for admission. NRI / Foreign nationals are also eligible to apply for admission subject to fulfillment of prescribed conditions. The candidate should be medically fit. Eligibility certificate is to be obtained from the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore for those who have passed other than Karnataka PUC-2nd year examination as per prescribed rules. NOTE : While applying for the issue of eligibility certificate to the above University the following documents should be enclosed to their application. In respect of NRl's / foreign nationals photostat copies of the course curriculum of 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th standards, duly attested by the Principal of the School concerned. It may be noted that out of 4 years study, the candidate should have taken (2) two courses each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology to become eligible for admission to the 1st B.D.S.Course. The SDM College of Dental Sciences is among the very few colleges in the country that not only meets the stipulation and requirements laid down by the Dental Council of India, but also very often surpasses this. Library The institution is known for its library facilities offered for higher knowledge with a built up area of 8350 Sq.ft with a seating capacity of 240 students at a stretch. The library has over 4859 volumes of books of various dental and medical specialities on its shelves. Besides there are 82 dental journals which includes both national and international journals. The library works from 8.00 Hrs. to 00.30 Hrs. on all working days and 8.00 Hrs. to 23.30 Hrs. on holidays. The students can sit, read and write comfortably without disturbing others. The library also provides an additional in-house facilities of photocopying, Audio-visual system, Computers, Internet, E-mail and Medline on CD-ROM so as to update the knowledge with the latest development in any field of the world. The annual budget of the library is Rs.10,00,000 to subscribe, the latest journals, books of new addition and to maintain the standards. Library is well maintained by an experienced librarian and other library staff. COMPUTERS The institution provides an added facility in computer training aided management program through APTECH within the institution between 5.00 to 7.00 p.m. enabling them to keep up with the growing trends of information technology along with Internet, E-mail and CD-ROM.
